"Joyous view, cheerful, and lovely appearance / Such is the sea when, tranquil and calm / It murmurs, whitening, up to the shore". These words are from Torquato Tasso's Il Mondo Creato. The lieta vista appears roughly midway through the route and especially in the last stretch, along the luminous shore of the Gulf of Trieste. The route, which goes from Portogruaro along the littoral, may seem distant from the sea (in atmosphere, culture, and history, if not in actual miles), when it passes through the vineyards and intensive farming of the Friulian plain or past the grassy bastions of the Venetian citadel of Palmanova. In reality, the ties to the sea are close and fertile: observe the landscape of the lagoon of Grado - silent motionless sheets of water, reflecting the flight of aquatic birds and a fringe of pinasters on the horizon - and the all-encompassing relationship between sea, people, and history. Beginning with Portogruaro itself, an ancient market town, greeting boats and goods; then Aquileia, where the cypress adorns the ruins of the Roman city, another fine river harbor; not to mention cosmopolitan Trieste.
Your route
The starting point is Portogruaro in the province of Venice; from here, we would recommend two interesting excursions: the first, 2 km to the south, is to Concordia Sagittaria; the second, 10 km to the north, leads to Sesto al Reghena, where you can tour the abbey of S. Maria in Sylvis. From Portogruaro you can then take the SS 14 road to Venezia Giulia and Trieste, as far as Cervignano del Friuli. Here you turn onto the SS 352 road, for a northward detour, as far as Palmanova. On your way back, you continue past Cervignano, still on the SS 352 road, toward Aquileia and, across the lagoon, to Grado. Following this road across the island of Grado and through the reclaimed land on either side of the mouth of the river Isonzo, you will reach Monfalcone. Last comes Trieste, along the SS 14 road, which here hugs the coast of the Gulf of Trieste.
